Streamr (DATA) is a decentralized peer-to-peer network. Data sources can connect with any node in the network and publish data, which the network then promptly delivers to subscribers. Scalability is achieved through a sharding model.
The network integrates with the Ethereum blockchain, using smart contracts for critical node operations, such as monetization models and access control. Decentralization means anyone can connect, control data, and monetize it.
In addition to the Streamr network itself, the team is developing two projects:
First, a marketplace to facilitate data trading, essentially a store for data streams. The most popular and reliable data will be showcased through reputation scores.
Second, a visual programming environment and real-time analytics engine, which is already operational.
Project Overview
Streamrs mission is to build decentralized infrastructure for real-time data, replacing centralized messaging brokers with a global peer-to-peer network. By relying on cryptography instead of trust, the open-source network enables data sharing and monetization in IoT and smart cities, business consortia, and the decentralized Web (Web 3.0).
Streamr is a distributed open-source project that was crowd-funded in 2017, with contributors from around the world. It was initiated as a response to the dominance of the big five tech giants, with a core belief that decentralized infrastructure can provide healthier distributions of money and power, unlocking new use cases.
How It Works
Streamr provides a complete system that allows people to create unstoppable real-time data applications without coding. Currently, valuable user-generated data is controlled by large corporations. In the Streamr network, you can use and sell your data as you see fit, within an uncontrolled, incentivized decentralized P2P network powered by the DATAcoin token.
Take a self-driving electric vehicle as an example. To provide the best driving experience, a self-driving EV needs to aggregate data from other machines, such as traffic congestion information from other cars, electricity prices from nearby charging stations, and weather forecast data. Streamr offers a unified interface for data delivery and payments, allowing users to trade data streams using DATAcoin tokens.
The car can autonomously acquire the data it needs and pay for it. At the same time, the car can sell the data it generates, such as traffic data to other vehicles, road condition measurements to smart cities, and location and battery level data to advertisers. A data stream economy emerges.
Streamr Technology Stack
The decentralized real-time data pipeline is built on multiple layers of technology:
● Streamr Editor: A suite of user-friendly interfaces and toolkits for rapidly developing decentralized, data-driven applications.
● Streamr Engine: A high-performance event processing and analytics engine that executes off-chain tasks in a decentralized manner. It can run on decentralized computing providers like Golem.
● Streamr Data Market: A platform for sharing data streams where anyone can contribute and subscribe to data streams.
● Streamr Network: The data transmission layer that defines a peer-to-peer incentive network for messaging in a decentralized data stream pipeline.
● Streamr Smart Contracts: Enable nodes in the Streamr network to reach consensus, maintain stream metadata, handle permissions and integrity checks, and facilitate secure token transfers.
